I think it was a solid-fuel ballistic missile launched from a US submarine. Planes do not create exhaust plumes like that, nor do they fly at such a steep angle upward for so long.



The very fact that the US military claims they don't know who fired it suggests that they fired it. If the US military didn't launch the missile, they would be extremely interested in who did, and would cause a big international ruckus. Instead, when questioned, they give glib responses like "It was probably a plane", which sounds very much like a 'plausible deniability' strategy.



Why would the US military launch a ballistic missile? Simple - to remind other nations that they can, right before the G20 meeting.
