I was reading an article on a TSA agent using the controversial body scanners in despicable ways... Regardless, I was weighing the odds of the very frequent privacy invasion to the low frequency of plane hijacking and wondering if its not worth it. I'm not asking for your opinion on the validity of such scanners, its all opinions, but What is the average death in a plane hijacking? Like theres an average of 100 deaths per plane hijack, or something. Thank youWhat is the average number of deaths in a plane hijacking? The last hijackings of a commercial airliner in the USA were on 9/11/01. Sadly as we all know all innocent lives on board were lost, along with thousands on the ground.
Before this time there was a general policy of compliance with a hijackers demands and in most cases all on board survived. Since then I safely say any would be hijacker will be met by violent resistance from the flight crew and many passengers. As demonstrated when brave passengers and crew attacked and subdued the so called 'underwear bomber' last year.
Those of us flight crew that are now armed will shoot to kill any hijacker, those of us that are not will use any force necessary including dramatic and abrupt flight maneuvers to thwart an attack. Would be hijackers know this. There are of course some deranged and evil mass murderer wannabes out there who still may try. Therefore security checks such as those carried out by the TSA are a necessary evil.
However I agree with you and most in the industry agree that the TSA have gone too far. We joke that TSA now stands for 'Thousands standing around'!
Even as a pilot on duty on my way to my aircraft, I am subject to the same intrusive searches you describe. Even though I promise every time to the often surly and ignorant TSA agent that I will not hijack myself!
I know this is more than you asked. Hope I didn't bore you. What is the average number of deaths in a plane hijacking? It's not worth it.
El Al has had no successful hijackings since the 1970s due to its reinforced cockpit doors (that were in place well before 9/11), sky marshals, and security who interview every passenger who boards by asking them a few simple questions, looking for signs of nervousness or duress.
And if you want to be safe personally, take defensive driving lessons, install good tires on your car, and try to limit your time on the road as much as possible. The same number of people die on US roads every month as were killed in the 9/11 attacks. What is the average number of deaths in a plane hijacking?Bro, I don't think it matters how many lives could potentially be lost if extra security measures were not taken. There is no balancing to be done I think any amount of privacy iinconvenienceconvienience is worth keeping one life from being lost.
Thats like getting grilles installed on your jets intakes: it is very unlikly that a bird will fly in there but it's worth the money to keep you safe.
