Would a small cloud appear to get dispersed as the plane went through or would little bits of the cloud trail behind the plane? Please also let me know if you have seen or can find any footage like this. Thanks!Would a plane have any noticeable effect on a small cumulus cloud? As a matter of fact it does affect a cloud. If you've ever heard about distrails; the word is short for dissipation trails. It is the total opposite of what is called contrails (those thin, long artificial clouds usually formed by aircraft above 25,000ft, depending on temperature and other factors). Distrails actually 'dig' a tunnel through a cloud (can only be noticed if the cloud is very thin).
Why is this? The aircraft's exhausts absorb moisture out of the cloud which the aircraft entered (scientifically, clouds form where relative humidity level is 100%. The rise of temperature - caused by exhausts - causes humidity to drop below 100%, causing those visible waterdrops forming the cloud to evaporate and turn into water vapour again).
