Some good ones will carry twice that far reliably. With effort at designing optimum receiving antennae, etc, I am sure much greater range than that could be achieved. Even at a half mile, being able to see the model starts to become more of a limiting factor than the radio. Although larger sailplanes are often flown at great distances and are somewhat easier to see due to their size and high-visibility patterns on them.

It depends from many factors such as: fuel tank capacity, engine type, plane type, plane size, radio set, weather and etc. But approxiately you could reach about 8-15 miles range with a middle size plane and nitro engine (for example Super Tigre G-51). A little bit less with helicopter. Of course it is just a facile answer without special estimate, you can reach and much bigger range.
